How can we break through the limitations we’ve set for ourselves? That’s what Michael Port, author of The Think Big Manifesto, wants to know. “Sometimes we assign the role of ‘Big Thinker’ to some people, but we don’t necessarily see ourselves in that role,” he says. Often, that’s because of “voices of judgment” – either negative peers and colleagues telling you why something will never work, or (even more damaging) your own internalized voice, telling you the same thing. But in order to truly thrive, he says, we have to let go of our self-imposed limitations – I can’t talk to that person; she’ll never hire me; that idea is too risky – and give things a try. Here are four of his best strategies to get going and expand your horizons now. Get Comfortable with Discomfort. Port tries to practice what he preaches. When he was recently asked to give a speech to an audience of 3000 in Australia, he could have delivered a standard keynote address. Instead, he decided to hark back to his days as a professional actor and use the talk as an opportunity to develop an entirely new type of speech – a one-man show with music, film clips, and more. “I’m trying to do something I’ve never seen anyone do in a keynote before, ever, and if I pull it off, it’ll be brilliant, and if not, I’ll bomb, and there’s not a lot in between,” he says. “The best performers are the ones who take the biggest risks, and the performer who raises the stakes high enough is the one who is generally most compelling.”

Humans evolved as social animals with “safety in numbers” as a core survival instinct. That’s why cultural conformity is such a powerful force. It takes courage to go up against societal norms, challenge the status quo, and take on the majority crowd and their widely held beliefs. The threat of being isolated from the pack is a powerful deterrent. And yet, we are perhaps the most adaptable creatures on Earth, creating communities, organizations, cities and nations that support billions of people in diverse and often harsh environments all over the globe. Our unique adaptability has enabled us to scale, diversify and innovate. Conformity and adaptability are not opposing but complementary forces. One is not right, nor the other wrong. They exist side by side in our makeup. A healthy balance enables individuals and civilizations to survive and thrive, to maintain stability while moving forward at a reasonable pace. Fruits smoothies can be an easy way to nourish your body with essential nutrients. The best way to know the exact ingredients in your smoothie is to make them yourself. All you need is a blender, fruit and a base, such as water, milk or yogurt. Making your own smoothies can help prevent fruit from going to waste, while providing benefits that will keep you on the right track towards good health. Persistence is probably one of the most admirable characters a person can possess. It’s the ability to be determined to do or achieve something regardless of any setbacks. No great achievement is possible without persistent work. – Bertrand Russell A distinguishing attributes of those who succeed in life against those who don’t is persistence. Many has the capacity to set goals and plans toward success, yet only few succeeds, because only few stick to work on their goals and plans until it is accomplished. Majority stops before they even start or they quit in the middle of their journey. Oftentimes, the reason for quitting is hardships, discomfort and uncertainty. They let their fears and doubts paralyze them from moving persistently toward their goals. Or perhaps, their motivation isn’t firm enough to drive them to work on it. In this article, instead of focusing on the many types of detox diets you can do, we will get into the nitty-gritty of the actual health benefits of detoxing. Given the amount of toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis, a good quality detox plan is not only beneficial, but necessary. What is a detox? Let’s start with the basics, as there is quite a bit of confusion around the topic of detoxing. A detox diet aims to help the body rid itself of toxins. Of course, the human body has many natural detox pathways via the liver, urine, sweat and feces. While it is a complex process, the liver neutralizes toxic substances, and then releases them from the body (1). A diet specifically for further detox claims to help the bodies vital organs rest and recover, support and increase liver function, and give you a “boost” of important micronutrients. Detox diets come in many forms, although most involve some sort of fast (water, juice or broth), and are followed by a period of clean eating. Some include smoothies, supplements, herbs, teas, enemas, and other methods of promoting detoxification. I’m back! This hiatus has been lengthy, but much needed. I was tired of posting mediocre content on a fluctuating schedule. So from now on, I will be using my own illustrations for artwork, and posting on schedule, teaming up with other inspiring minds to bring you all the topics you’ve been asking me to cover. For this one, I teamed up with Jihanna Taylor. I started following Jihanna after numerous people would tell me about a girl they felt was “like me”, not physically but creatively. Jihanna is an artist, like myself and recently I noticed, we have similar life philosophies as well. Jihanna has chosen to stay single since 2015, I’ve been navigating the single status for a much shorter time period but we have had similar experiences and both committed to better learning ourselves and our craft. She has experienced first hand just how powerful she is when putting the energy that was once spent nurturing dead-end relationships, on herself and her creative endeavors. After graduating this past fall her focus has been entirely directed on her craft and her brand. She has teamed up with top hair and fitness companies and is continuing to build on her art portfolio while taking commissions. Why This is a show that takes you into the mind of young creatives and entrepreneurs explaining why they do what they do. On this episode, Kevin Murphy, an aspiring rapper from Homestead, Florida tells us why he loves music and chose rap as a way to express himself. As I read over the 56th Fighter Wing’s fiscal 2017 strategic plan, I came to understand there are few things more important to success than a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished. The overview of “The 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness,” by Stephen Covey, provided me the fundamentals necessary for aligning that vision with the Comprehensive Airmen Fitness philosophy of helping others to do the same. Covey takes us from his groundbreaking lessons in personal change in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” to greatness in finding your voice and inspiring others to find theirs in “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.” In this book he talks about the 21st century as the age of the knowledge worker (a person whose job involves handling or using information) and how organizations from top down and bottom up need to change their 20th century paradigm of the Industrial Age, and tap into what he calls the “whole person” in order to succeed and thrive. The whole person The whole person concept involves the body, mind, heart and spirit. In the Industrial Age companies and organizations were mainly interested in the worker’s body and mind. This was the age of making things, which required physical skills (the body) and mental skills (the mind) with very limited worker engagement or empowerment. Here is one of those basic laws of life: There will always be opportunities for those who recognize and pursue them. The lucky people are simply those who have taken more chances than average. But you need a strategy for seizing opportunities, one that consistently demonstrates your passion for and commitment to your field. Stick with your plan, and you'll reap rewards in your job search or business endeavor. Here are three steps for creating your own opportunities: |
