From team sports to a friendly neighborhood game of tag, there are many benefits that come from kids playing outside. However, most parents will argue that the benefits that matter the most are the ones that affect their child's physical and mental health. We sat down with Alyssa Ross, from KaBOOM, Debi Huang, a mom and writer behind the Go Explore Nature blog, and Lindsay Legendre, from the Natural Wildlife Federations Be Out There movement, to give us the low-down on five of the most important physical and mental health benefits of kids playing outdoors. 1) Improves Vision A study published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that kids who spend time playing outside are at a reduced risk of developing "myopia," or nearsightedness. The team of researchers found that a child's chances of developing myopia dropped by two percent for each additional hour spent outdoors, per week. The study concluded that getting kids to spend more time outdoors could be a "simple strategy" to reduce the progression and development of nearsightedness in children.

If you're experiencing dizziness, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or palpitations your doctor may suggest that you have an electrocardiogram. This cardiovascular test, abbreviated as EKG or ECG, is a non-invasive test typically performed in your doctor’s office and measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat. How Is an Electrocardiogram Conducted? No special patient preparation is required for an EKG test. During the test, you will lie on an exam table and a technician will place several small sensors on your chest, arms and legs. These sensors have wires called leads which connect to the electrocardiogram machine. They create a 3D map of your heart's natural electrical rhythms, which can immediately show whether you have any unusual heart activity. The sensors don't deliver any electrical current; they only record your body's own natural heart rhythms. The test lasts for six seconds, and the results are printed out and can be interpreted immediately. What an EKG Is Looking For This test primarily checks the rhythmic behavior of different chambers of your heart. By measuring the time interval of the ECG a doctor can determine how long it is taking an electrical wave to pass through your heart. This shows if the electrical activity is normal, fast, slow or irregular. It also measures the amount of electrical activity passing through the heart which helps your cardiologist find out if your heart is enlarged or is overworked. 5 Stretches That Reduce Stress & Are Perfect For Winding Down After A Long Day by Georgina Berbari3/20/2018 When you're stressed AF, your mind isn't the only thing working overtime; your entire body responds by getting tight and tense as all hell. From a cramped up neck, to knotted shoulders, to that ache in your lower back that just won't go away, stress can feel like Satan himself is tagging along uninvited wherever you go (seriously, GTFO dude). That's why implementing stretches that reduce stress into your everyday routine is super important for relieving your entire body, relaxing your mind, and sending that stress-inducing devil back where he belongs. According to ShareCare, when you're stressed out, your blood flow becomes restricted, which creates tension in your lower back, and even most of the other muscles in your body. That's why, when anxiety hits, your mind isn't just cloudy; your whole body feels off, and you feel like you're due for a day devoted strictly to deep-tissue massages. However, throwing in a few revitalizing stretches can help stimulate your nervous system and decrease the production of those dreaded stress hormones that are bringing you down. Stretching effectively to specifically target stress means isolating tension-storing muscles — which are typically the shoulders, lower back, and neck. A few years ago, while I was teaching a writing class abroad in Morocco, one of my student’s parents asked to talk to me. She noticed her son had made major progress in his writing and wanted to let me know she appreciated my effort to make the work fun and engaging. Her appreciation was so sincere and her gratitude so heartfelt that it still gives me a warm feeling just thinking about it. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so satisfied with anything I’ve done before or since that moment. To know that your work means so much to someone else made me understand the value that comes from helping other people. We all have a voice. We all want to be heard. This show gives the new leaders of the world a platform to get things off of their chest. We weren't placed on Earth to waste time. We know how valuable and delicate life is. We understand that it is going to take a community effort to change this world. Our purpose in life is to inspire others to find their voice and to never be afraid to use it. This episode takes place in a very intimate setting in an urban neighborhood in Miami FL. With a group of about 8-10 people we sat down, networked and express our truest feelings about life and society. The energy in the room was magical and unexplainable. The best way to put it in words is freedom. We tasted true liberation!
Listen to the soulful vocals by KTLN. Her voice is amazing and lyrics are so honest and heartfelt. She definitely has next!
We’re constantly bombarded with messages about what makes for a good life. Advertisers tell us it comes from owning and consuming their products. The media associate it with wealth, beauty or fame. And politicians claim that nothing matters more than growing the economy. But do any of these things really bring lasting happiness? For thousands of years, people have looked to philosophy, religion and grandmotherly wisdom for answers to such questions. But in recent decades this ancient wisdom has been tested by scientific research. Scientists have found that although our genes and circumstances matter, a huge proportion of the variations in happiness between us come from our choices and activities. So although we may not be able to change our inherited characteristics or the circumstances in which we find ourselves, we still have the power to change how happy we are – by the way we approach our lives. Action for Happiness has identified 10 keys to happier living, based on an extensive review of the latest research about what really helps people flourish. These are not “10 commandments”, because each of us is unique and what works for one of us may not for someone else. They are simply 10 areas that tend to make a big difference to people’s happiness - and crucially they are all areas that are within our control. What causes some of us to bounce back and persevere in response to failure or disappointment, while others are left despairing and defeated? In my experience as a psychotherapist and host of The Failure Factor podcast, I've identified seven qualities of resilient entrepreneurs (and people!): 1. The ability to find meaning When we experience disappointment, loss, or trauma, finding meaning in our pain helps us accept and integrate what we've gone through. Resilient individuals trust there's a gift, lesson, or opportunity in every challenging situation . For example, the founders of Sakara Life made their "mess into [their] mission." Do it: Get into the habit of imparting meaning onto unwanted experiences, asking yourself, "What lesson is in this?" or "How can this help someone else?" or "What emotional tolerance muscle am I strengthening right now?" If you're having trouble identifying a "gift," trust one will emerge in the future, or tell yourself that this unwanted experience is actually protecting you in some way. As creatives, our being revolves around being innovative. That innovation inspires others the same way we were once inspired by our predecessors. But there’s a thin line between inspiration and imitation. Is it wrong? One of my favorite books is “steal like an artist” by Austin Kleon. I loved it because it made me want to break free from the need to “be myself” and find my artistic style so early on. It was choking me. I wanted to sit in front of a canvas, have an epiphany and know exactly what I was meant to create for the rest of my life. Life doesn’t work that way. Instead I started paying attention to what I liked. Trying to create original pieces in similar styles that I had seen and liked. But creativity lives in me so I could never be satisfied mimicking another’s work. Instead I started picking and choosing what worked for me, what spoke to me, and leaving everything else, through that process I found my own style. I decided to start writing more of my own blogs. I haven’t done a lot of individual blogs for myself because I wanted the FDF platform to grow some more. I never wanted the website to be about me as Kasey Render. I always wanted to be apart of something bigger than me but still have complete control over my life. I finally understand that I have arrived in this lifestyle. Every part of me exudes FDF yet I still have my own identity that parallels the FDF image. I have transformed myself from an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist marketing himself as a personal trainer, into an extremely important asset. I have spread my brand farther than anyway possible as just a personal trainer. I have my foot in the sports world at all levels (YMCA, elementary, middle, high school, college and even professional). I have strong connections in the music industry at all levels (managers, artists, producers, engineers, executives). I have strong ties in the community as I am partnered with two non profits who I will announce soon. I was a high school basketball coach at Terra Environmental Research Institute. I was the head coach for the JV team and assistant coach for the Varsity team. I was also unofficially the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the team. I travel to my client's homes and train them in complete comfort. We are very open with each other and have very memorable conversations while exercising at the same time. I get to experience their lives and learn from them just as much as they learn from me. My life amazes me every second of the day. I’ve pinched myself enough times to know that I am blessed. I am slowly starting to figure out the specific keys to living the life of your dreams. I know for sure that one of the specific keys is to become an asset in this world. To me and in my life this means do more than what is expected of you. Undersell and over-perform or over learn and under let out (never tell exactly how much you know, just enough for the moment). Everyone is appreciative and often times impressed with who I am. A part of this is because I am genuinely a good person. Being genuine and good at what you do helps you become an asset. This is good in business because it lets a person know that you are worth the risk. Or there may not even be a risk. Having you around is a win win situation. If you can make yourself a win win situation you are an asset. A liability in someone’s life is if you are not living up to your potential or you are taking away from someone’s life. This could be wasting their time, taking their money, or taking away their respect of you. The more you become an asset in this world the more opportunities you will get. And if you are living the life of your dreams then opportunities will come to you in your sleep... |
