This week I was intrigued when I heard about the fast that has been going on around the country to protest budget cuts at the Capitol. It consisted of thousands of people, including pastors, activists and high school students, who began fasting as a path of action. The main concern among many was that the proposed budget sought to reduce funding to poor women and children in this time of dire need in the country. One of their statements was to consider: Is it morally important to look after the poorest among us? Whether we agree with their position or not, seeing people step out and stand up for their beliefs regarding the conditions of others is powerful. I just finished binge watching Gossip Girl and one scene really stuck out to me. During a father-son moment where they discuss Dans feelings for Blair, Dan says to Rufus regarding whether or not he’s in love with her- "It's not like high school, it takes time" To which Rufus replies- "To feel or to admit?" What if I were to tell you that being the underdog would give you more power than you could ever dream of. Would you think I was crazy? Maybe so, but aren’t all geniuses? The moral of the story is that if you feel like an underdog somewhere in life, you actually have a massive competitive advantage if you play your cards right. While others spend their lives sulking because their parents didn’t spoil them relentlessly, you know better. You know that being an underdog in life can prepare you for greatness. Below are 3 reasons why being the little guy can actually be your winning ticket: I can remember punching, but doing it more so out of reflex than because of conscious thought. The ringing in my ears was the only sound that I could hear, though I could see the crowd cheering ringside, and I could feel my opponent’s punches landing. I’d just been dropped in a fight for the first and only time, and my reaction was as it should be: I got right back up and started fighting. Had I stayed down and accepted defeat, I’d never know if I was a real fighter or just a wannabe, a warrior or a pretender. It’s in pain and struggle that we experience growth. Pain, struggle and defeat show us more about who we are and what we’re capable of doing than times of ease. We are given an opportunity to grow stronger in pain. Whether we seize that opportunity will either lead to our further development, or usher us toward our weakening, our decline. |
