What do you do for a living (school/job)? I work at a physical/occupational therapy clinic as a tech. I attend the University of Florida and majoring in a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training. Do you think about your health? I think about my health constantly, especially since I am not entirely happy with my level of health. How do you feel about the way that you eat? My nutrition can always improve. I have a tendency to bury my stress in late night binges. How active were you when you were younger and what activities did you do for exercise? Did you have P.E.? My childhood was FILLED with activity. You would never find me inside. I spent everyday playing basketball, flag football, riding my bike, or climbing trees. Now for exercise I run, bike, rollerblade and lift weights. What is your dream in life? Are you working towards that dream? My dream in life is to build a career and enjoy every second of it. I am very much working towards that dream. I have been for the last three years. How stressful is your life right now? If my life wasn't stressful something would be wrong. (Extremely stressful) How do you cope with your stress? I try my best to use exercise as my outlet for stress or reaching out to my parents to vent. Other times food is involved. Do you know how to exercise properly? I think I know how to exercise properly. I'm sure improvement could also be used in that category as well. Do you know how to eat healthy? Yes I know how to eat healthy in a general aspect. Not entirely comfortable or knowledgeable on counting micros and macros. What changes do you want to see in the health industry? I would like to see more opportunities to try new things. I am a huge fan of obstacle course races and would love an "American Ninja Warrior" style gym in my area that I can go to no matter the time of day. And will not break the bank as I am on a very limited budget going to a big name school. Do you think being healthy will ever be at the forefront in society? I have high hopes that America will wake up and realize how extremely unhealthy this country is. I find it sad that little kids at my son's elementary school are already obese. They are being set up for a disadvantage at such an early age. Follow on Instagram @sabrina_parks

Artificial sweeteners might seem like a low- or no-calorie way to enjoy sweet food and not gain weight. But a new study links them to the opposite. In the report, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers analyzed 37 studies on artificial sweeteners to see if they were successful for weight management. The studies followed more than 400,000 people for about 10 years. Seven of the studies were randomized controlled trials, a type considered to be the gold standard in scientific research. Artificial sweeteners did not appear to help people lose weight. Instead, observational studies that looked at consumption over time suggested that people who regularly consumed them—by drinking one or more artificially-sweetened beverages a day—had a higher risk for health issues like weight gain, obesity, diabetes and heart disease... Do you think about your health? I would be lying if I said that I have always thought about my health in the past but now I think about it all the time. From what I consume to the exercise that I put in as well. How do you feel about the way that you eat? I personally feel that I eat pretty “clean” some may say that I’m a bit obsessive with my food but I’ve gotten use to my own meal plan and I’m perfectly fine with it. I’m okay not eating out at fast food restaurants but I also am not obsessive over being healthy that I won’t ever have a “cheat” meal. How active were you when you were younger and what activities did you do for exercise? Did you have P.E.? When I was younger I was always very active. I was brought up in a very athletic family so I was always involved in sports starting from a very young age. I had P.E. the summer before my freshman year of high school and then I played basketball pretty much year round between high school ball and AAU. I never had to really worry about doing anything extra because I was so well conditioned at the time. I didn’t realize how active I really was until after I chose to stop playing basketball once I went to college. What is your dream in life? Are you working towards that dream? After basically transforming my ENTIRE outlook on life as far as health and fitness and just bettering myself, I wholeheartedly want to become a personal trainer. It sounds kind of surreal but I believe this is truly my calling. I want to be able to help others achieve their goals, get healthy and really just be proud of the body that they’re in. I am currently working each day towards this dream. How stressful is your life right now? My life isn’t too stressful, I mean just as stressful as any other recent college graduate. How do you cope with your stress? As cliché as it sounds, I like to workout when I’m stressed. I like to lift heavy and sweat out any pent-up stress I may have. Do you know how to exercise properly? Seeing as how I’m studying to become a personal trainer, I would hope to know how to exercise properly! Lol. Do you know how to eat healthy? Yes, even though it did take me some time. I had my experiences with the shakes and the fad diets, you know, the quick schemes. I had to reteach myself how to eat basically; I’m so glad I did. What changes do you want to see in the health industry? The crash diets! People need to learn that the things that advertise quick weight loss or anything of the sort usually aren’t very healthy. Yes, you may see some pounds drop off the scale but you can quickly gain all of that back once you start eating normally once again. Like I stated, people need to retrain themselves on how to eat healthy. Do you think being healthy will ever be at the forefront in society? As scary as it may sound, I’m not really sure. With the fad diets and get fit quick schemes, surgery…who knows? We are in an era where it’s easier to set up a consultation to look the part but people don’t even realize that you can be lean and look a certain way but still be unhealthy as ever. I would love if people would take their health into consideration the way they do other things but to be at the forefront in society…that’s a reach for now. F0llow on Instagram @kyjxo
What do you do for a living (school/job)?
Software Consultant (full-time) & Landscape/Adventure Photographer (Part-time) Do you think about your health? I think I live a healthy lifestyle by staying active and exercising 5-6 times a week. How do you feel about the way that you eat? I am not strict about my diet, but I try to eat healthy, especially when I cook. How active were you when you were younger and what activities did you do for exercise? Did you have P.E.? I was in a bit better cardio shape when I was younger from playing soccer competitively. I had P.E. all the way up to Freshman Year in high school. What is your dream in life? Are you working towards that dream? My dream is to become a full-time professional photographer and I am currently building that business as fast as possible so I can make the transition from a traditional corporate job. How stressful is your life right now? My life is generally pretty low stress, but I sometimes feel the stress of the demands of working hard on both jobs while trying to spend time with my friends and loved ones. How do you cope with your stress? I get outside in wilderness areas and hike/camp, exercise, and meditate. Do you know how to exercise properly? Generally speaking, yes. Do you know how to eat healthy? Generally speaking, yes. What changes do you want to see in the health industry? I want to see less reliance on prescription medication and more use of homeopathic techniques such as meditation and exercise. I believe the pharmaceutical industry is helping people live longer, while also reducing the quality of life for their own financial gain. Do you think being healthy will ever be at the forefront in society? I think being healthy is already playing a large role in American society, but I do not think it will ever be one of societies primary concerns. I think it is only somewhat of a concern in developed economies. In economies where people don’t even know where their next meal is going to come from, their primary focus will not be on whether they are eating a balanced diet or if their food is organic or not. |
