That's the narrative nowadays. As everyone becomes blatantly open about their gripes and as we push for a more conscious society, the Internet has decided men are trash. They're cancelled. Thassit! We are sick of their sh*t. Its funny on twitter and little memes but in reality, is the statement fair? And more than that, what can we do about it? It seems like the collective opinion. Like all men are trash. Personally, I've never liked generalizations and this one is no different. We can't get to the root of the problem with a generalization, just like the “all black women are bitter and loud” narrative. First of all we have to admit the problem doesn’t solely lie with men or any one race, in general, some people just suck! Some of the societal norms in place can be blamed for why it may seem to be more saturated for one group versus the others but noting that is important when we want to get to the bottom of these character traits that grind our gears. For example, we want men to be in tune with our emotions yet raise men to be emotionless, it’s crazy to think that a skill as complex as that can turn on with a snap of our fingers! I’ve been emotional all my life and that stuff is still difficult for me. In a city as prosperous as San Francisco, residents living in HOPE SF public housing in the city’s southeast neighborhoods have lived in poverty for many generations. Families living in HOPE SF earn less than $14,000 per year; 53% of students are chronically absent from school; most adults have not gone beyond high school; and 90% of young people, ages 18-24, are unemployed. It is absolutely true that breaking the cycle of poverty requires institutional and systemic change, but equally important is understanding and addressing personal experiences and individual transformations that have to occur for people to move from poverty to economic independence. A few weeks ago, I attended the Disrupting Poverty Conference in Boston, hosted by the Crittenton Women’s Union. Here are five take-aways from the conference that we can apply to our work helping transform San Francisco’s HOPE SF communities and other impoverished communities: If you had to choose, like Anakin Skywalker, to use your powers for good or become a menace with the Dark Side, which would you pick? It's tough, because Anakin never intended to join the Dark Side, but certain events and persuasion forced his hand. I love the phrase, "the road to Hell is paved on good intentions," because no one really is trying to be a bad person. People just get caught up in the madness and bad decisions they make can lead them down the wrong path. The same can be said for hackers. While one might think what they're doing is wrong, from their perspective, they're doing right. But James McQuiggan, who is part of the cyber security team at Siemens, unveils a troll whose only pleasure is your displeasure, well and money of course. It's all the difference in either restoring balance to the force or being the most notorious menace in all the galaxy! Send me questions or comments on Twitter @Younicooo or Instagram @younico. The Routine When you can barely squeeze a workout into your day, taking time to focus on flexibility may feel like, well, a stretch. But stretching is an important part of fitness: It can improve your range of motion, increase circulation, and calm your mind—which may help fend off injuries and illness, as well as bring on a better night’s sleep. To limber up, try the following quick head-to-toe routine created by Dana Slamp, a senior yoga instructor at Pure Yoga, in New York City. Do the complete series once daily. Deepen each stretch with every exhalation, and stop if you feel any strain or pain. Carrots are more than a tasty addition to soups, salads and juices. They are also good for your body’s overall health, especially that of the skin, eyes, digestive system and teeth! So if the sweet flavor isn’t enough, enjoy these 10 reasons to eat more carrots: 1. Beta carotene: Carrots are a rich source of this powerful antioxidant, which, among other vital uses, can be converted into vitamin A in the body to help maintain healthy skin. 2. Digestion: Carrots increase saliva and supply essential minerals, vitamins and enzymes that aid in digestion. Eating carrots regularly may help prevent gastric ulcers and other digestive disorders. |
